Rabbit proof and deer proof fencing in East Anglia
PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION OF DEER PROOF & RABBIT PROOF FENCES & FENCING ACROSS CAMBRIDGESHIRE, NORFOLK & SUFFOLK.
If you are having problems keeping deer or rabbits out then the installation of an appropriately designed and installed fence is often the best loong-term option. A well though out, installed and constructed fence will provide many years of service in excluding these species. We have also constructed areas to retain deer in.
Rabbit and deer fences are highly effective at combating the damage caused by these species, both on a large scale i.e. tree and spaling protection, crop protection or on the slightly smaller scale i.e. protection of landscaped areas, domestic gardens or maintaining the amenity of areas like sports fields.
Please do not fall into the trap of thinking that any old fence will keep these species out, it wont. They are prolific jumpers, diggers, pushers and burrowers…! To achieve successful exclusion care must be taken at the fence design stage.
We are a specialist contractor for the installation of rabbit and deer fences operating across East Anglia– if your require advice on design or specification, or looking for a installer, then please contact us for an informal chat.

DEER PROOF FENCING
The construction and specification of a fence to exclude deer is heavily dependant on the species trying to either be excluded or contained. A fallow deer can jump significantly higher than a muntjac for example..!
Many fencing contractors have not installed, or do not install these types of fences– be sure your contractors knows what they are doing.
The physical contstruction required in a deer proof fences should not be underestimated– the typical mesh sizes and post sizes for deer fences is given below– taken from an excellent series of notes from the Forestry Commission.
Generally deer proof fences are constructed in a traditional manner with wooden stakes dug or driven into the ground. Regardless of species you will be looking at a minimum finished height of 1.5m (5ft) with some species requiring a full 2m height (ca 7ft). The deer fence (mesh) is then attached to the wooden stakes at appropriate intervals. Again the mesh aperture used will be species dependant (smaller holes for smaller deer). The tricky part then comes– the tensioning of the fence (specialist straining equipment needed here!!). In some cases i.e. muntjac it may be necessary to sink the wire into the ground by a small amount, or add a line wire, to stop them pushing under the finished fence.
We install deer fencing across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk– if you require advice, installation or assistance please do get in contact with us.

RABBIT PROOF FENCING
The general specifications for rabbit proof fencing are provided by the Woodland Trust, Forestry Commission and the BCTV. We generally work to the following:
- Straining posts: 2.1m x 125-150mm diameter
- Struts: 2.1m x 75-100mm diameter
- Intermediates: 1.7m x 50-75mm diameter
- Line wires: Two, mild-steel of 4mm dia (2.5mm is normally sufficient though)
- Netting: Galvanised, 31mm hole size, 1050mm height (width)
- Staples: Max of 30mm
- Finished height: Minimum of 75–80 cm above ground
- Bottom: Either turned out 150mm towards rabbit pressure or dug in to the ground 15cm.
We do prefer to dig our netting in but there are occassions when turning out is the only option.
Our experience shows us that a straining post every 50m is sufficient, or where changes of direction or elevation are encountered. We aim to place intermediates every 4 m although this is somewhat dependant on ground conditions.
Rabbit proof fencing can be installed as a stand alone option although we often install it as a combination fence with either post and rail or deer fencing for example.
We install rabbit proof fencing across Cambridgeshire and the neighbouring counties– be you a farmer, contractor, landowners, school or a domestic household.
