Rabbit fencing Madingley Cambridge

Project Title/Objectives: Instal­la­tion of a rab­bit proof fence to exclude rab­bits from an agri­cul­tural area to pre­vent seri­ous crop dam­age.  A neigh­bour­ing area was har­bour­ing sig­nif­i­cant num­bers of rab­bits which were caus­ing plant loses.

Addi­tional to the rab­bit fence a con­trol option (rab­bit drop box/trap) was also installed in the fence line to pro­vide a long term pop­u­la­tion reduc­tion measure

Client: Farmer / agri­cul­tural con­trac­tor based just out­side of Cambridge

Descrip­tion: 1050 mm rab­bit fence dug in to a depth of 200 mm along the hedge line of prob­lem area.  Total dis­tance was ca 450m with the fence going past the prob­lem area by 50m at either end.

  • Strain­ing posts are 1.8 and 150 mm diam­e­ter, dri­ven in 800mm. Posts are strut­ted with inter­me­di­ate post in the direc­tion of strain.
  • Inter­me­di­ate posts are 100 mm diam­e­ter, 1.6m long, dri­ven into ground ca 700mm and cen­tred at every 3.5m.
  • Line wires are 2.5mm and fixed with grip­ples. Line wire at top and bot­tom of.
  • The large dig­ger was required due to the com­pact­ness of the soil
  • Posts were cre­osoted for extra pro­tec­tion before being dri­ven in

Out­come: The rab­bit fence has been work­ing very well with suc­cess­ful exclu­sion of required pest species.  The fence line is reg­u­larly main­tained to ensure no breaches or damage.
